Once a prison that housed Finland’s worst criminals, Kakolamäki is today a destination of the more savory sort. Since the jailhouse closed in 2007, the area has been redeveloped to offer a hotel, restaurants, bakery, brewery and more – the latest addition being that of a top-class spa.
Inaugurated during the Covid pandemic, Kakola Spa boasts four different pools, five saunas, offers a selection of treatments, and exquisite dining is provided by the adjacent restaurant, Kakolanruusu. Now receiving circa. 1500 discerning customers per week, the spa has been ranked Finland’s second-best by Iltalehti, the country’s biggest tabloid newspaper.
Local businessman and Chairman of the Board, Olli Ojala, first invested in the site back in 2005 making it his personal mission to revitalize the area. His vision for the spa involved capturing the outstanding natural beauty of the surrounding archipelago through thoughtful interior and lighting designs.
Just as the Finnish seasons seamlessly shift throughout the year, the lighting should be able to change – inconspicuously invoking different emotions throughout the spa. Casambi was specified on account of its ability to deliver the required flexibility for this.
By delivering Casambi Ready relays, dimmers, motion sensors, Tuneable White LED-strips and RGBW LED-Strips, Flinkenberg has successfully brought the project to life. The support poles of the main spa area are lit up with LED strips, which can change color – even utilizing certain colors to indicate happy hour at the bar or flash sales on beauty treatments.
The massage and beauty treatment rooms are adorned with wireless switches and pre-set scenes can be recalled for function areas as per the need or occasion. The toilet lighting is activated using motion sensors to ensure that they’re only on when needed. Similarly, the lighting in the technical rooms is controlled with relays and motion sensors. All this culminates in a seamless and quality experience for the guests and staff alike.
